MedShare Welcomes Emory University President James W. Wagner to Volunteer for Emory Cares International Service Day

November 13, 2009

ATLANTA, Georgia. – MedShare welcomes Emory University President James W. Wagner to join 45 Emory volunteers in sorting and repacking surplus medical supplies donated by Atlanta area hospitals to be shipped overseas to developing countries.

This Saturday, MedShare is participating in Emory Alumni Association’s (EAA) 7th annual Emory Cares International Service Day, where alumni, students, parents and friends gather to join in a day of community service in specified cities throughout the U.S. and the world.

There are over 800 volunteers registered for community service projects in Atlanta. MedShare is the only community service project President Wagner is scheduled to participate in out of the 24 service projects that day.

“Working to improve global health is one of Emory’s strategic initiatives; it’s something I have heard President Wagner speak about time and time again. He’s has always been a great supporter of the Emory Alumni Association and his participation in Emory Cares is another great example of that selfless involvement,” said Kerry Gallo, coordinator for alumni programs and Emory Cares administrator, Emory Alumni Association

MedShare has an average of 60 volunteers from Emory each month that help sort and repackage donated medical supplies that will be shipped to needy health care facilities in developing countries. Many of the supplies sorted by those volunteers are actually collected from Emory Healthcare hospitals, as they are MedShare’s largest donor of unused, unexpired surplus medical supplies.

“MedShare and Emory have had a rich, strong relationship since the beginning of our organization. We welcome President Wagner and his wife to MedShare and are honored that he chose to volunteer with us on Saturday,” said A.B. Short Co-Founder and CEO of MedShare.

The volunteer session with President Wagner will be on Saturday, Nov 14 from 1:30-4 p.m. at MedShare Distribution Center, 3240 Clifton Springs Rd., Decatur, GA 30034.
