MedShare Ships Emergency Relief Aid-Sponsored by Chicken of the Sea-to American Samoa

October 03, 2009

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. – On October 3, MedShare shipped emergency relief aid requested by the Department of Public Health in American Samoa. Chicken of the Sea sponsored the shipment of medical supplies needed to treat victims of Tuesday’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

“Chicken of the Sea’s relationship with American Samoa spans more than five decades, and we are deeply saddened by the tragic events there following the recent tsunami,” said Shue Wing, president of Chicken of the Sea International. “Our partnership with MedShare is helping us aid relief efforts in the area by providing much-needed medical supplies, as well as support the many people who have dedicated their working lives to Chicken of the Sea.”

The medical supplies shipped on Saturday, Oct. 3 by S.F. Enterprises from the Port of Oakland direct to Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, where the brunt of the tsunami hit. In the shipment, MedShare provided vitally-needed medical items, such as sutures, oxygen tubing and masks, orthopedic supplies and surgical supplies. The majority of medical supplies were donated to MedShare through humanitarian relief agency World Vision and its partner Cardinal Health.

“Through all these collaborative efforts, MedShare was able to use its expertise in international logistics to quickly respond to the emergency medical need in Pago Pago,” said A.B. Short, CEO and Co-Founder of MedShare.

“With the Samoan community here in the U.S. still in shock at what has happened, we’re grateful to be working with partners like MedShare and Cardinal Health and sending relief supplies so quickly,” said World Vision’s national program director and Samoan American Lina Thompson.
