Imagine never having a single ultrasound scan during pregnancy to give reassurance that everything is fine because no one is available to repair the machine. Or not having the equipment to sustain the life of a pre-mature newborn because the technology so readily available in nations like the United States isn’t anywhere to be found.
As featured in this month’s e-news article focusing on our recent training trip to Africa, solving the equipment crisis for the world’s poor is a top priority at MedShare. This is why we have invested so much time in building a leading biomedical engineering program that seeks to provide a holistic solution to the equipment shortage that plagues the developing world.
MedShare receives surplus biomedical equipment, such as incubators, portable ultrasound units, and anesthesia machines among hundreds of others. Our biomedical engineers and trained volunteers receive and evaluate donated equipment to verify it is in good working order. Equipment is evaluated, calibrated to fit the recipient’s needs, and manuals and transformers are provided when available. Often, a MedShare biomedical engineer visits recipient hospitals and clinics in the developing world to ensure that equipment is properly installed as well as to train staff in its use.
In light of the overwhelming demand for this life-saving equipment and training, MedShare’s Senior Biomedical Engineer, Eben Amstrong, says, “I hope to have a long life, so that I have time to get to teach all of the people who need me!”
MedShare needs your help to raise funds to support our Biomedical Program so that we can continue to include the most urgently requested equipment on our shipments and provide training where little or none exists. Click here to make a tax-deductible contribution to provide hospitals with life-changing equipment. Also, if you know of a health care provider who has equipment to donate, a list of current priority items that we are seeking is available here.
Gifts made through the Critical Need Alert represent a gift to the entire mission. We use your gifts where they can do the most good by pooling them with the gifts of others to help transform entire communities. And, because you are helping MedShare save lives, your gift is tax deductible.
